To start with, ridge treks are quite rare in our country, with only a few available. During our exploration of the Phulara Ridge trek in April 2018, we stumbled upon what seems to be one of the most exceptional ridge treks.
A ridge is essentially the point where two sides of a mountain come together. Walking on a ridge is akin to balancing on a narrow knife-edge, with the mountain’s slopes dropping sharply on either side of you. While there are brief ridge sections on a few Himalayan treks, the Phulara Ridge trek offers a full day’s worth of ridge walking, which is truly unparalleled.
If you’ve ever embarked on a summit climb, you’re aware that you typically spend only about 20-30 minutes at the highest point, enjoying panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. However, on the Phulara Ridge trek, you’ll find yourself at an elevated altitude of 12,000 feet for a full day’s trek, spanning approximately 4-5 hours!
Throughout this journey, you’ll be treated to a breathtaking 250-degree panorama of snow-capped mountains that accompanies you every step of the way. It almost feels as though these majestic mountains are trekking alongside you as you follow the meandering curve of the ridge. Below, the terrain slopes down on either side – one side leading to a serene meadow and the other descending into a picturesque valley. This is what sets the Phulara Ridge trek apart, offering a truly unique and unforgettable experience.
Kotgaon, the trek’s starting point, is a charming village nestled in the mountains with a few dhabas and shops.
The scenic drive to Kotgaon follows narrow mountain roads along the Yamuna River, passing through Mussoorie, picturesque valleys, and a dense pine forest stretch after Purola.
Kotgaon is a bustling hub for trekking, serving as the base camp for popular treks like Kedarkantha, Har Ki Dun, Bali Pass, and Borasu Pass, offering breathtaking views of the Himalayan peaks, including Swargarohini, and memorable sunsets.
The trek commences in Kotgaon village, leading through a charming pine forest after crossing a bridge from the village. An hour’s ascent brings you to the picturesque Shirpuri clearing.
At Shirpuri, choose the left trail toward Hargaon, passing through more pine forest and reaching Hargaon, where shepherd huts can be spotted.
Continue straight from Hargaon to reach the renowned Juda Ka Talab, or for a more exciting route, explore the left trail through fragrant Himalayan Cedar forest, rejoining the main trail from Juda Ka Talab. Proceed left within the forest, and there’s another suitable clearing on the left for tent pitching.
Discover a picturesque trail with scenic ledges and snow-capped peaks in view. After a charming bridge and a 40-minute ascent through vibrant flora, reach ‘Sikolta,’ a meadow with rustic huts.
Ascend 30 minutes through a dense forest, cross a stream, and head up to ‘Karsu Thatch,’ blanketed in yellow flowers. Then, a 15-minute climb leads to ‘Dhunda Top,’ your campsite with a flowing stream.
From here, enjoy breathtaking views of Kedarkantha and more. Don’t miss the mesmerizing sunset, moonrise, and sunrise.
